You might want to hurry out and get this book for a guide to quick summer trips.   We're pretty damn lucky to live in a state where you can be at the beach, the desert or the mountains, all in about two hours from each other.

Ramble California breaks it down for quick reference and the guy is spot on with his recommendations.  A lot of them are quirky and "off the beaten trail", which adds to the fun of planning something a little different.
